Arrival In the South July 27, 2006

Well, after a nearly 48-hour road trip south, Sarabeth and I have finally arrived in Houston.  Tomorrow we’ll unload and unpack what stuff we can, entertain my youngest sisters, and otherwise start trying to settle in.  We’ve been here a few hours, and despite being DEAD TIRED I can’t quite sleep yet.

The girls (as in, my sisters) seem happy that we’re here, but the other girls (namely, my cats Sirius and Alastor) are a little freaked out by their new surroundings: new people, new layout, new pets (including 2 dogs, which will be loads of fun).  Since the sisters are on summer vacation, they’re staying up late as they please, which I have to admit isn’t unwelcome right now.  Hopefully the cats will settle down after a couple days.

I’ve already had some interesting conversations with the girls already: what their schools are like, what kind of work Sarabeth and I will be looking for, and the differences between how comic book companies (and their respective universes) work, for starters.  They want access to some of my video games, but they’ll have to wait until they get unpacked tomorrow. :)

It’s me again, Mr. Once-a-Month… ;)

So, the holidays were hectic, as always (which is a bit disturbing when you consider that I’m single, and far away from family… you’d think those would be the cause of the extra hectic-ness).  Contrary to popular belief, I did get pictures of the Turkey Day festivities, so go check them out despite their somewhat outdatedness.  I’ve always had a high opinion of my cooking, so I’m proud to say that things turned out relatively well.

I also got to show off my cooking skillz several times this season by making lasagna (which is my SIGNATURE dish… been makin’ it for years and am cocky as all get-out about how good I think it is).  I think I made five pans in the last few weeks (one of which is in the refrigerator, awaiting my stomach).  All I know is that many people enjoyed it.

Christmas Day itself was pretty nice.  I spent it with some friends, to whose house I’d brought the kittens for the weekend (that was an adventure!  Sirius and Alastor are used to having just each other, and they go from that to three more cats and two [cat-friendly] dogs.  I don’t think I’ve seen them so freaked).  I also received a nice package from my family, which included my mom’s and grandma’s tamales.  Bad for the body, but my body and soul BOTH thank them for overnighting them… :)

I did not receive the Firefly show set for Christmas, but I did purchase Serenity (which I will review at some point soon) with a gift card I received.  I also got a gift card to IKEA from my friends, which was a pleasant surprise.  Now I just need to get up there…

Anyways, that’s enough for now.  I’ll blog soon again about New Years.  I have a resolution in mind that may interest some of you, but that’s all I’ll say for now.  Talk soon! ;)

Cast Off! October 6, 2005

An update on the kitties: I got up for work this morning, and noticed that Sirius had gotten one of her pawcasts off.  She continued to mewl plaintively at me to remove the other one.  Alastor was livid.

I came back late in the morning to check on them, and Alastor now had one of hers off.  So now they’re both walking around, a true pair of peglegs, each having cast off their, umm, casts.  And each mewling at me to remove the other one.

I could swear they’re engaged in a race to see who’ll get free first.

Surgical Throes and Vet Woes October 4, 2005

Sirius and Alastor returned from their overnight stay at the vet, and are looking a little worn for the experience.  I can only imagine the amount of anesthesia required for declaw and spay operations!  Anyway, they’re walking around in these forepaw casts that protect their paws from injury.  I feel bad for them, but I can’t help laughing when they try to walk.  It’s sort of like watching a four-legged AT-ST from the Star Wars films!

Don’t worry, I’m sure Mother Karma will bite me in the rear for it somehow…

For those of you who are curious, I took pictures of the returned little darling monsters.  Some might think it’s in poor taste, me photographing the kittens while they’re still in recuperation mode, but if you look at my latest pictures, I think you’ll agree that they preserve Kitty dignity very nicely.  They’re mostly of the kittens lounging in the perch I made for them (out of guilt/sympathy), napping and looking outside.
