Dang It, Google, STOP IT!!! September 2, 2008

I was writing some reviews on my MySpace blog, and noticed something really annoying while doing it!

I try to link to a few useful places in my reviews, to provide the reader some context and generally be helpful.  Generally I go to Google, and google–for instance–Stephen King.  The first site that comes up is http://www.stephenking.com, like I’d expect.  It even gives that as the link, like I’d expect and prefer.  But when I right-click on the link and select the Copy Link Location option, the code I end up pasting into the hyperlink is some long, convoluted mishmash of letters that Google has obviously tacked on.

This is supremely annoying!  I want my viewers (all 2 of them!) to be able to see the simpler code, not this “Courtesy of Google” BS!  I think it’s more than a little absurd that I have to end up typing the URL in myself.

What ever happened to the convenience of the net?  Did it give way to the tyranny of the name-brand?

For those of you who don’t know (and the only person I can say for certain who DOES know is the incomparable Ann Z, cuz she told me about this in the first place), but some social networking sites, like Facebook, have this awesome little feature that allows you to blog in one place (say here, for instance), then import it over to the most blog-like feature at that site–in Facebook’s case, the Notes application. The effect is that I can blog from one place and have my thoughts broadcast (in Hi-Def! no, not really) at other places fairly soon afterwards, with no additional effort.

I think this sort of thing is great, particularly because I’m one of those people who has footprints all over the net.

(Seriously, I’m pretty easy to find. If you know any of my usernames–and I have several–you can pretty much map out a good chunk of my life. One of the women I recently dated told me some pretty surprising things about myself, though nothing really unsettling. Still, it makes you wonder how much of yourself is really out there. If SkyNet ever comes after me, I’ll need a miracle.)

Digressions aside, I think it’s more than a little appalling that a popular social networking site like Myspace doesn’t have this same awesome capability (or if they do, I sure as hell can’t find it). For those of you interested in tracking down even more of me, here’s my Myspace page, but I don’t really maintain it that well anymore. I check in, occasionally do a survey or something, and sometimes re-connect with people who have found me, but that’s pretty much it. I’m much more active on Facebook (such as it is), primarily because I’ve found their applications to be a little more user friendly. But the Myspace blog hasn’t been touched in over two years, in part because of limitations like this.

Now, I’m holding out hope that Myspace will change its ways. The application is still pretty popular with the young adult and teen crowd (though others are gaining ground), and they have made some pretty nifty modifications in the last couple of years. They need to work on the functionality of their blogs, and internal calendars if I’m going to continue using it as an outreach tool to advertise YA programs and services to Houston-area teens. Still, I continue to hold out hope that they’ll improve. Until then, check for my updates on Facebook.

And, oh yeah… it’s been nearly 6 months since my last post. Miss me? ;-)

So at this point, I’m slightly behind on the 500 words-a-day thing.  As of just before this post (which counts), I’m at about 480 words a day, and hoping to break myself back up into the 500-level within the next day or two.  So far my eligible writing has consisted of blog posts, continued work on the Nighthunter script, and various writings of prose, poetry, etc. that will likely never see the light of day. :)

Ineligible writing has included letters of recommendation for people, proposals for work related items and programs, and some online “assignments” that I do for continuing education.  All things considered, I’ve been doing a lot of this stuff.

Still, I’m very pleased with my progress so far.  When you consider the following, my 480-word-per-day streak is pretty remarkable:

  • The amount of ineligible material I’ve also written;
  • That I’ve been sick (and I mean seriously ill) for a good portion of the last week;
  • That I’ve made about 10 pages worth of progress on the script since the New Year; and
  • I’ve also been in the process of trying to locate housing for the near future.

Once I’m actually able to barrel down and get my life in some semblance of order, I should be able to maintain some healthy writing levels in no time!

Ah, the little things that make me happy… :)

So… like the new digs?  The color scheme’s not perfect, but it’s decent for the kind of theme I had in mind.

Given that I’ve had this blog for nearly a year now (actually, almost exactly a year), I decided a new look and theme was in order for several reasons.  First of all, the black font on white background was getting boring, so I’m figuring blue-grey backing and flashes of red and orange will liven things up a little.  Secondly, anyone who’s read my blog will probably tell you that the name "theserialsguybrarian" probably doesn’t do much to evoke what actually appears in it.  I mean, I’ve written a little bit about serials and librarianship in here (and will continue to do so), but this is mostly about my life and the cute, quirky things in it.  In short, the content just wasn’t matching the form, and vice versa.

So, since I didn’t really have a uniform theme in mind for my next incarnation of this place, I decided to keep it as open as possible, hence the name Opalescence.  Opals, as Feste’s quote suggests, come in many different colors, and the color of the light glinting off of them can change depending on the angle at which they’re held.  Shakespeare used them as a symbol of unpredictability and variability, and since I’ve pretty much written about whatever’s held my fancy at the time in here, I find the connection very fitting.

I’d honestly like to change things up a little more, visually speaking, but I’d have to upgrade my account to do that.  So, for the moment, this scheme is what appeals to me.  It could change at any time though, which would keep with the theme of the blog.  We’ll just have to see… :)

I wanted to send props to Sarabeth for adding a new illustration to her commissions page today.  It’s a picture she’s doing for one of my friends, and it looks great.  As always, I’m in total awe of her artistic skillz. :-)

Heyheyhey, heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee’s back!

**Flourish and bow**

I’ve been urged by my friends to pick up the proverbial pen and write again, so I’m doing just that.  I’ll start off small, since I’ve gotta run soon.

There are two new blogs I’ve added to my Blogroll (though, since you’ve never seen it before, it may appear to be four).  First, I’d like to welcome Iris, the Pegasus Librarian, to Blogland.  Iris is a friend and colleague I’ve known for about a year now, and she recently told me she’d "joined the dark side" and started a blog.  There is also Sarabeth, whose blog, she has warned, is quite random.

Anyway, welcome to you both!

The Great Experiment July 12, 2005

I have a blog on Blogger, but figured I’d give TypePad a go-round, since it looks like it can do some things my other blog can’t.  I’m not crazy about the idea of paying for a blog, but I also wasn’t crazy about the idea of paying a monthly fee for online gaming… until I took a look at Star Wars: Galaxies.  But I digress.

I’m extremely interested in the categorization abilities of TypePad, and the calendar features look kind of nice, too.  I’d be interested in hearing what other people like/love/hate/can’t stand about this service as well.

A little bit about me:

I’m a big geek.  This fact is supported in several ways, most importantly by my obsession with many things escapist fiction.  I love Star Wars, Star Trek, and Harry Potter, for one (and yes, I’ll be in line with all the other obsessed kids and parents for the release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince).  I also enjoy the online gaming thing, as mentioned above, though I’m no longer "in to" Star Wars: Galaxies; I’ve now "moved on" to City of Heroes, and don’t see myself leaving it anytime soon.

In addition to the escapist streak, there’s the fact that I am a librarian.  I work with the serials collection at a small liberal arts college in Minnesota.  For the record, I have never "shushed" anyone, though I have had to ask a few rowdy kids to save their wrestling antics for the gymnasium.

That is all for now.  Get to know me more as I post.  Who knows, maybe I’ll stick with this "pay-for-the-blog" thing if I like it enough.
